There are still 12 towers strategically placed around the island which used to warn the habitats about foreign attacks. Most Mallorquins initially worked - in addition to agriculture - especially as pirates and (stone-throwing) mercenaries in wars - those „jobs“ already started 2000 years ago. However, piracy was not only a source of income but also a great danger for the Mallorcans and especially for the seaside and geographically isolated Sóllerics. Again and again there were raids from the sea and the population tried to protect themselves with an island-spanning network of watchtowers (atalayas).
